A black-chinned hummingbird has taken up residence on a hook in our carport. This is the second black-chinned nest to occupy this hook over the last six years. She laid her first egg on 06/18/2006 and the second on 06/20/2006.
The first egg hatched the morning of 7/04/2006.
The second egg hatched 7/07/2006.
Nestlings at 6 and 9 days old, 07/13/2006. The mother spends most of the day away from the nest but returns to feed the nestlings about once an hour. She spends nights on the nest.
The hummingbird that hatched on 07/07/2006 died on 07/14/2006. The first hatchling is growing fast and is very active in the nest. The mother bird does not sleep on the nest anymore but returns about once an hour to feed the nestling..
Feathers are beginning to break out of their sheaths, 07/19/2006
Most feathers are now out, 7/23/2006. The nestling is very active, trying out its wings. The young bird is almost full sized now. It should fledge with the next two to four days.
