Rows of tubercles have long, hooked, tangled-looking spines.

Large stout central spine is hooked and may be pink or red.
Well-developed central spines at the top of mature plants are broad, white, twisted and papery.
Red, pink, or white radial spines are variable but are smaller than central spine.
