DECIDUOUS TREE.  Heavy branches, dark bark, and large alternate pinnate leaves with long oval, pointed, bright green leaflets.  Inconspicuous flowers in spring.  Fruit hard, green, spherical, to 4-5 cm.  Inside the dry thick husk is a smooth, hard-shelled nut that splits into two heart-shaped halves.  An important food and shade tree for wildlife.  A riparian tree, rare in the Empires as isolated trees in Davidson Canyon (in photo) and in a few other large washes.  Velvet Ash (Fraxinus velutina) has opposite leaves and winged fruits.  Soapberry (Sapindus saponaria) is a smaller tree with much narrower leaflets, pale bark, and small yellow berries.
