Echinocereus fasciculatus  Common Hedgehog Cactus
CACTUS.  Clusters of columnar stems with thin, brown-tipped white spines.  Bright magenta flowers bloom in April.  Common in gravelly soil in desert and desert grassland.  In the Empires, fairly common throughout, but usually at lower elevations than E. fendleri.  E. fendleri has thicker, sparser spines and more rounded, less ragged tepals.  E. coccineus has red flowers and longer white or yellow spines, and grows on rock.
