Allionia incarnata  Trailing Windmills
PERENNIAL.  Thick, creeping, pale pinkish stems have overlapping oval, short-pointed, fuzzy, dark green leaves with prominent veins and wavy edges.  Flowers are bright pinkish-purple with five petals that are cleft twice, so it may look like the flower has ten notched petals.  Two forms:  the large-flowered form has flat or saucer-shaped flowers, 2-3 cm. in diameter.  The less common small-flowered form has flaring cup-shaped flowers, usually 1 cm. or less.  Blooms all summer.  Common throughout the Empires on disturbed ground, sand washes, dirt roads, etc.
